I am so excited to finally be sharing an interior design post on my blog. This is the first of many to come! What better room to start with than the bedroom of our little VIPs.
In this post I’m going to take you inside our toddler boys’ bedroom, discussing all the elements of the room and how the design came about.
I will link all the products mentioned, so if you click on the link it will take you to the relevant shop where we bought the product.
Like many boys, my little ones are obsessed with vehicles and all things transport! So picking a theme was rather easy.
I’m very happy with how it turned out. I hope that from reading this post you get some inspiration for your child’s bedroom too!
What We Use This Room For
We have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and they share this room.
This bedroom is used only for sleeping and reading, which is why you don’t see any toys or toy boxes. We have a separate playroom where we keep all the toys.
I like to keep the bedroom a peaceful space which is calming for the kids so that it is easier for them to wind down and rest.
Book Storage
Every night before bed we read books together. The kids love reading, and as you can see they have a lot of books!
I organized all the books in a way that is easy for the boys to reach and find what they are looking for.
I had this RÅSKOG cart from IKEA which was not being used so I thought I would try it out for the books and it works perfectly!
We also have some bookshelves on the wall. These are actually picture frame shelves but they work perfectly for displaying books.
Giant Poof
Because we all read books together, I needed to find a comfortable spot for us all to sit.
I love this GIANT poof because our whole family of 4 can sit on it together comfortably. Our poof is from Lounge Pug, I haven’t linked them because to be honest we weren’t so happy with a few things about it.
Firstly, it arrived with about 5 separate boxes of the foam balls which fill it and you have to put them in the material bag yourself. You can just imagine the giant mess that creates when you’ve got all those static balls floating around!
Once they were in and we cleaned up all the stray balls we were happy with the look, feel and comfort. However, I have since discovered that you get poofs like this which you can remove and wash the cover. Had I known they were available I would have opted for one like that instead.
Even with all that said, I love this poof. I imagine we will get many years of use out of it because I can see our boys 10 years from now chilling on it while playing video games or watching a movie.
Clothing Storage
For the clothing storage we have one cupboard with hanging space, 2 shelves and 2 draws, as well as a chest of draws with 8 draws. Both these units are from the STUVA range at IKEA. I love the little pops of color that the knobs add!
I hang all the kids jackets in the closet and store extra blankets and bedding in the large draws.
In the chest of draws I store all the other clothes. I must be honest, this does not provide enough space for both our kids clothes. I think it is more appropriate for one child.
We are planning on buying another STUVA chest of draws (identical to the one we have) so that we have double the draw space. We just haven’t gotten around to that yet.
On the side of the chest of draws, we stuck 2 mirrors so that the boys can look at themselves after I dress them, which they love doing!
Shelves
The floating shelves above the poof are there to display sentimental items that belong to the boys which gives the room a nice personal touch.
The letters for Gideon’s name are from Babyglück and the letters for Christopher’s name are from Sevi.
Accessories
- Cross: the cross on the floating shelf is very special to me. I bought it from a shop in France while I was pregnant with Gideon.
- Personal items: apart from all the personal items on the shelves, the boys each have a Steiff bear (Charly & Carlo) which they got 2 Christmases ago and they sleep with them every night.
- Door stop: the door to the kids bedroom tends to swing closed so I put this doorstop there to keep it open.
- Cushions: the cushions (Bus & Hot Air Balloon) on the poof are both from IKEA. I love how the hot air ballon matches the painting above Gideon’s bed!
- Growth chart: the colors and cars match the theme of this room perfectly! It’s also an item I picked up years ago, which just happened to work beautifully.
- Age blocks: I bought these at T.K. Maxx a while ago. I like to update the blocks each month.
Wall Art
Each of the boys has a stunning painting above their beds which was hand painted by my mother in law. It is such a special touch and matched the room perfectly which was a complete coincidence because she made these paintings long before we moved to this house.
I made Gideon and Christopher each their own canvas with a very special message in hopes that it will remind them that they are children of God. Often I read it to them and they love it! I made it using my Silhouette machine.
Curtains
We got these curtains on Amazon and I love them. They are bright and colorful and the vehicles are big enough that you can easily identify them. I think a print with many small cars would be too busy.
They also ended up being the perfect length so I didn’t need to make any adjustments.
As you can see these are not blackout curtains, they are mostly for aesthetics.
We have shutters on the outside which completely block out the light so getting blackout curtains was not necessary.
I initially wanted to use wallpaper in this room with transport images on it but with all the other tasks we had around the house I wasn’t sure I would find the time.
I decided to use graphic print curtains as a temporary solution but now I am so happy with these curtains I think I will keep them.
If they boys want a different theme a few years from now or when they move into their own rooms I will reconsider wallpaper or just easily change the curtains.
Rugs
The star rug is from IKEA and we have had it for ages. The neutral grey allows it to blend in effortlessly with many themes and color schemes.
The sheep skin between the two beds is the 60cm SKOLD from IKEA. It warms up the space and the kids enjoy playing with it.
Walls
I don’t think I would have chosen green for the walls but this just happened to be the color of the walls when we bought the house and it matched so perfectly with Gideon’s Ted bed that I decided to keep it and I’m so happy I did!
It is a pastel color which is very calming. I wouldn’t want to have the main color of the walls too bright or dark so it works well.
I prefer the green to a stark white because sometimes that can feel a bit cold.
Beds
Let’s start with the Stokke crib. We love this bed. I found it on Mamikreisel second hand when Gideon was a baby. Now Christopher is using it. For for a few months after we moved into our new house the kids wanted to sleep in our room and we didn’t mind because I think it made the move and transition easier for them.
While he wasn’t sleeping in the crib we converted it into two chairs which was a really great solution! Now that both boys are happily sleeping in their room again, we put the crib back together. We removed the one side to turn it into a toddler bed.
In the future when Christopher wants to upgrade to a car bed or something bigger we will definitely put these chairs together again.
To get Gideon excited for the new house and his new room we told him he could choose any bed he wanted.
I went on Amazon and showed him every toddler bed they had available. Cars, busses, fire trucks, houses, teepees, Mickey Mouse, Thomas the Tank Engine. You name it, there’s a bed theme for it!
Every time he kept going back to this Tractor Ted bed. Compared to all the others it was very affordable so I was happy too.
What I really like about this bed is that the sides are high and the gap to climb in is small so he can’t fall out which is necessary for him because he moves around a lot in his sleep.
In Gideon’s bed, you can see he sleeps with my pregnancy pillow which I used when I was pregnant with him. I wanted to use it with my second pregnancy but he wasn’t willing to part with it, which I think is really cute.
Sharing
Having the boys share a room has been an absolute blessing for us. I don’t think that they would sleep there if they were alone.
Sometimes in the night when Christopher wakes up, Gideon goes to him and assures him that everything is okay, and that just warms my mommy heart like you have no idea.
That concludes the little tour of our boys’ room. I hope you enjoyed it! If you would like to take a look inside the playroom for some more ideas, let me know in the comments!
Sincerely,
