If you have a guest WiFi or you often have people connecting to your home WiFi, then this post is for you!
This simple DIY will save you and your guests so much time and hassle. It will also have your friends thinking you are way more tech savvy than you may be!
I don’t know about you, but one of my pet peeves in life is typing in a password. In this day and age you can’t have your password be something simple like cats123.
In order for it to be secure you need a computer generated 20 character password. No one has the time or the patience to type that in. Is that a capital “O” or a zero? A one, capital “I” or lowercase “L”? I’ve pulled my hair out many a time.
No more, my friends. Those days are behind us! I have the solution. Create a QR code for your guest WiFi. A simple solution for an annoying problem.
Quick disclaimer before we get started: when it comes to technology of any kind I am far from an expert. To call me a beginner would be a push. However, even knowing as little as I do I was able to get this right. Hopefully that is an indication that just about anyone can do this.
How A QR Code Works
If you’re not familiar with a QR Code, it’s basically just a code made up of black squares and dots. You scan it with the camera on your phone, which translates the information attached to the code. It has many uses, one of which is connecting you to a WiFi network. This is what we are going to explore today!
All you do is open your camera and point it at the code as if you want to take a picture of it. The phone will scan the code and ask you if you want to connect to the desired WiFi network. You click okay and you are connected. No need to select a network or type anything in.
How To Make A QR Code
There is a website called QR Code Monkey where you can create a QR code for pretty much anything. It’s free and very straight forward.
At the top of the webpage you can see all the options for what you can make a QR code for, select WiFi.
It has 3 criteria fields you need to fill out:
- Wireless SSID (This is your WiFi name)
- Password (Your WiFi password)
- Encryption
Once you have filled in the info, select Create QR Code and then download the image of it.
Mind. Blown.
How simple was that?
How To Display Your QR Code
So what do you do with this QR code now? Print it out and then put it somewhere that is easy for your guests to see. This way they don’t need to awkwardly ask if they can connect to your WiFi.
How you choose to display it is up to you. I suggest putting it in a picture frame because it adds to your decor. Framing it will also protect it and keep it from getting lost.
A good place to put it is in your guest bedroom. You can also place it somewhere in the living room or near the entrance to your house.
Make it clear to your guests that the QR code is for the WiFi so that they know what to do.
I have created a few templates for you to use. You can make your own to suit your style and decor, but you are welcome to use any of these too!
Click the link to download the blank template:
- Template 1 (WiFi)
- Template 2 (Frame)
- Template 3 (Flower)
- Template 4 (Leaf)
- Template 5 (Phone)
All you do is add your own QR code, print and frame.
Potential Obstacle
Some people have a setting on their phone which prevents them from reading any QR code. If your guest is trying to connect and their phone doesn’t read the code, this is probably why. The setting can be turned off and then it will work.
This idea actually came from my husband who is rather tech savvy. I wouldn’t have thought of it myself, but luckily it’s easy enough for literally anyone to put together!
I hope you found this post useful! Now that you know just how easy it is to make a QR code you can create one for your website, YouTube account, social media profiles, and much more! You can also add it to your business card to make it easier for your clients to find you.
